light & Labor

Light & Labor is a multidisciplinary art studio centered on the physical act of making. Working primarily in the historic photographic processes, the studio constructs elaborate photographic tableaux through original fabrication; building props, costumes, puppets, paintings, and sculptural forms by hand. Images are characterized by inspiration from art history, scientific inquiry, and mythology. These constructed scenes are rendered through a slow, chemical process that makes each image a singular artifact.

Through pop-up events and workshops, Light & Labor invites participants into this ritual of light and labor, reanimating early photographic practice as both spectacle and shared craft.

Brian deemy

Brian Deemy is the artist behind Light & Labor, a Pacific Northwest–based studio working primarily in photography with a focus on historic processes. His practice explores the space where craft, concept, and material intersect.

Raised in Southern California, Deemy began in drawing and painting before turning to photography, where he found a lasting resonance in its balance of precision and expression. This interplay between technical discipline and creative exploration remains central to his work.
