Something I have been working on in the background for a while. This is my first iteration of a stop motion rig made from 3D printed parts and hardware store components (minus the Jeton joint spine from @morezmorestudio ) I have made a number of these puppets so far, but each has been a scratch build using various components. I want to make a significant number of these in order to bring many characters to life. My intent is to develop a standardized process in order to make batches of these. The Baptism Gold embellished cyanotypes 11x14 #cyanotype
American Grotesque 16x20 Cyanotype I am falling in love with the cyanotype process. Back in the fall I accumulated everything for the entire workflow in my within my own studio. I have been experimenting with the nuances of the process. While I have been making prints of various images from my catalog this is the first to go from principle photography straight to cyanotype. This image is based on the William Mortensen photograph L'Amour and draws its title from the definitive book on Mortensen (L'Amour is the cover image of the book American Grotesque). I originally made a version of this image in 2021, included with this post. That image, and 8x10 tintype, features an older hazmat suit I made. While working on the series Terra Exotica I made a new hazmat suit and wanted to revisit this image. I shot this photograph while also shooting the image for Temperance featuring the same character. Oh how things from that previous series came together. As I was finishing off the post production work I knew I wanted something in the sky to complete the trinity or triad of subject. Also for the series Terra Exotica I built this flying pyramid for The Tower. What a perfect subject to include in this composition and I was very pleased to use it again. This is my first time making a cyanotype of this size in recent years (I think it was 2018 the last time I worked at this size). It is a 16x20 sheet with a 12x15 image area. The scale of the negative combined with the developing process I am utilizing lends itself so well to capturing detail. Close up shots included to convey said detail. The Star (censored) 8x10 Wet Plate Collodion “This bird is a living creature, indicating that the connection between heaven and earth has become a living reality.” -Sallie Nichols Of the series, this is the image most influenced by the Rider-Waite version of The Star. I took the bird featured in the background and merged it with the subject in the foreground. Included is a picture of the mask made for this photo. Additionally I wanted to create a light, playful image, thus everything else in the image is a flat cut out. @alexasunamun did and incredible job modeling for this. The Hanged Man 8x10 Wet Plate Collodion Photograph Something that makes this piece special for me; this is the first costume I really made. It was a big pivot for me and the way I produce my images. I have made many pieces I love with this costume but this was the final piece I shot with this suit before retiring it. In the years since I made it I have acquired many new skills and it is time to make something indicative of those skills. The Devil 8x10 Wet Plate Collodion This was an archetype in the series I knew I wanted to do something different with. I was developing a few different ideas when I came across @hannah.charlton.arts version of Hades. I knew immediately I had to make a physical version of that piece (as I have felt for several of Hannah’s pieces). The figure is a three foot tall puppet with an internal armature for posing. The costume…that costume. I sewed a tunic out of black mesh and individually glued gems to it. That took awhile. #wetplatecollodion #studiophotography #miniaturephotography

“Death” 8x10 wet plate collodion Those who know my portfolio can imagine that for this image I had a number of ideas. The death card is for all intents and purposes a memento mori image. In that line of thought I pulled from traditional historic symbols of power: the crown, the robes, the mace, the sphere. The composition inspired by a detail from Lucas van Leyden’s Triptych of the Last Judgement. Judgement 8x10 Wet Plate Collodion This piece was particularly fun to work on. This series, Terra Exotica, pulled in literally every bit and type of skill I have acquired in my practice over the years. This was a great example of miniature work. You can see in the last image a view of myself with the model to see the scale. My favorite detail is the skeleton I made for the basket which scales the “Angel” to about ten feet tall. The kind of piece I would love to show my past self as an example of the kinds of things you’re going to be making. #wetplatecollodion #judgement #miniature #miniaturephotography
